Supporting young people to navigate consent – Dr Melissa Kang

Overview:
This webinar is the second of a series of webinars co-hosted by the NSW Department of Education and the NSW P&C Federation on working together to strengthen consent education.

The first webinar held on 17 June 2021 focused on the steps the government is taking to strengthen consent education. During this webinar, you will hear from our special guest speaker, Dr Melissa Kang (MBBS MCH PhD).

Topic and Presenter:
Dr Kang is a medical practitioner, educator and researcher, specialising in adolescent and youth health. For 23 years, Dr Kang was the medical consultant behind the ‘Dolly Doctor’ column in the popular teenage girls’ magazine Dolly.

Dr Kang will discuss how to support young people to navigate consent, including: 
•    A definition of consent
•    Exploring everyday situations and age appropriate language for having conversations at home.
•    How to approach the issue of consent, including the words to ask for/ receive consent.
•    The impacts of power on consent.
•    Where to go for help for your child or young person, and resources for parents and carers to support conversations at home.
